Upgrading… So The Site May Be Feisty Today

17 07 2007

Hey, so I’m finishing moving the site to its own shiny new hosting, so I can add cool features like “vote on this comment” and other stuff.

Quick explanation– and I’ll try not to lose anyone in the process–

I just redirected humancensus.com back over to humancensus.wordpress.com, while the DNS and all that other geeky stuff gets settled on the new URL.

If you’re not into tech stuff, ignore all of what you just read, and continue checking out HC exactly as you always do.

If you’re a geek to the core, and using RSS, it may be a little botched for a day or two, but you can always check out the site directly. ;)

Hopefully, the transfer will go smoothly and no one will notice a thing! :)

Get Human Census Updates From Your iGoogle Home Page

12 07 2007

Thanks to a suggestion from my friend Nick Disney, I added a “Google Gadget” which you can click on in order to add Human Census to your iGoogle page.

(iGoogle is basically a “customized Google home page”, where you can search Google for stuff, but also access your gmail, calendar, news sites, blogs, recipes, cartoons, or whatever else you want added to it.)

Here’s the link to our Human Census iGoogle gadget:

It’s also permanently on the right sidebar of this site. Enjoy! :)

Our First 1000 Site Views!

11 07 2007

So, today we just hit our first 1000 site views. Nice– thanks everyone!

Here are the stats from the first 18 days of the project:

Total Views: 1,000
Best Day Ever: 134
Views today: 67
Posts: 41
Tags: 9

So basically, it has taken us 18 days to get 1,000 site views, 142 comments, and more or less 20 active commentors.

I’ve been researching viral marketing techniques. And I’m curious:

  • What would it take us in order to get the same amount of views (1,000) and comments (142) in only 1/2 the time (9 days)?
  • Or, what would it take us in order to get twice the views (2,000) and comments (284) in the same amount of time (18 days)?

This is my new goal for the project: to either hit 1,000 views in 9 days, or 2,000 in 18 days– whichever comes first.

Any ideas? :)

New RSS Feed For Human Census

7 07 2007

Here’s the new feed for humancensus.com:

The old one (http://feeds.feedburner.com/HumanCensus) will still work for the time being, but once the site is finished being moved, there may be some hiccoughs.

Switching to www.humancensus.com

7 07 2007

Hey folks!

Sadly, this site is officially being moved over to plain old www.humancensus.com.

Actually, this will make it more convenient for most people, and I’ll be able to add cool things after I finish moving the site.

If you type in www.humancensus.wordpress.com, it’ll still take you to the right place. You’ll just be typing in more letters than you really need. ;)

I’m looking into a “vote on this comment” plugin, so the “Notable Answers” can be nominated by the community, rather than whatever stands out to me.

Any other plugins you think would make Human Census more awesome? Let me know.

I’ll be playing around with how the site looks, as well. If you love or hate anything in particular, don’t be shy about that. :)

Free! Offer! From The Human Census Project

1 07 2007

Every day I post the new question sometime in the morning– and thus far, it’s been completely random as to what time this occurs.

An interesting thing happened on Friday, and it happened again today: a reader saw the new question and posted a response even before I could. (And I comment within a minute or two of posting the question.)

So, here’s the official free! offer! from Human Census: if you manage to somehow be the first to comment on the new post, you can sponsor the question for the following day.

It won’t give you fame or glory, but it will give you the chance to ask the world a question you’ve been dying to know about, and a link to your website if you have one. (Or the website of your choice, providing it’s family-friendly.)

I’ll be posting a “Weekly Report” later to show the progress we’ve made in our first official week. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the Human Census!
